How to get to the Island of Elba

The Island of Elba can be reached by taking a ferry from the port of Piombino Marittima, from where, in the summer, the four companies TOREMAR, MOBY, BLU NAVY and ELBA FERRIES connect the island to the Tuscan coast.

From April to early October, connections with Elba are frequent, with many daily trips, even every half hour at certain times. During the rest of the year, however, the rides are reduced, still guaranteeing a connection to the island every 3 hours.

All the companies connect the main port of Elba, Portoferraio, to Piombino, while only Toremar and Moby arrive in Rio Marina and Cavo.

The crossing to Portoferraio takes just over 1 hour or, with the fast ships of Elba Ferries, about 40 minutes.
For Rio Marina the crossing takes about 45 minutes and for Cavo about 35 minutes.

Finally, there is a fast connection by hydrofoil, for passengers without cars, which reaches Cavo in just 20 minutes and then continues to Portoferraio, in another 15 minutes.

With a car or motorbike, it is always advisable to book the ferry in advance to be sure to find a place for the desired time, while it is not necessary for only passengers.

But buying the ticket online is also useful for foot passengers, as it allows you to avoid queues at the ticket office (possible in high season!) and go directly to boarding.

In addition, the online purchase allows you to compare the rates of the various companies, which often change based on the time, day and remaining availability.

Through our webpage "Ferries", you have the opportunity to purchase ferry tickets in advance with special rates; on the day of departure you can thus go directly to boarding with the tickets.

For those who prefer not to board the car and leave it in Piombino, guarded, paid or free parking lots are available in the port area.

From / to Corsica

During the summer, there is a connection operated by Corsica-Sardinia Ferries between Portoferraio and Bastia, with a crossing of only 1 hour and 30 minutes.

By car

Once you arrive in Piombino, the direction to the port is well signposted; to reach the port with the navigator, enter Piazzale Premuda as the final destination. At the port, those who already have a ticket can proceed to the docks for boarding, while on the left there are parking spaces for those who have yet to purchase at the ticket office.

During high season, it is advisable to go to the port a little in advance, at least 30-45 minutes before departure.

In addition, from Florence (Piazzale Montelungo, Santa Maria Novella station - platform 16) the bus service is active during the summer period which reaches the port of Piombino in just 2 hours 30 minutes. It is possible to buy the ticket online and, if available, also on board, without a surcharge (however, it is advisable to purchase the ticket in advance, since it is still possible to change the date within 15 minutes before the departure of the race).

Ticket cost € 17 (Florence - Piombino). For children up to 2 years of age - free of charge, reservation required.

Finally, the Trenitalia Freccialink bus service is also active from Florence, available for those traveling on board of the Frecce up to Florence and then continuing by bus to Piombino Porto.

(On the Trenitalia website, the Tiemme bus connections from Campiglia Marittima to Piombino Porto are not displayed, so to see the bus timetables, you need to look at the Tiemme website (http://www.tiemmespa.it/Viaggia-con-noi/Calcola-percorso/)
