The beach of Pomonte

Pomonte is one of the most characteristic places of Western Elba, from which you can admire, on the clearest days, the islands in the south of the Island of Elba: Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Corsica.

In ancient times the village, located on the slopes of the granite massif of Monte Capanne and along the splendid Costa del Sole, between Fetovaia and Chiessi, was a docking point for boats loaded with precious granite and good wine. Today the small village of Pomonte is one of the wildest on the island of Elba, divided by a ditch that crosses it and which delineates the boundary of the Municipality of Marciana with the Municipality of Campo.

In Pomonte there are three beaches, a few meters from each other, perfect for those who love tranquility or snorkelling: in fact, in the blue of its seabed, a few meters from the shore and a few meters deep, lies the wreck of the Elviscot.

The first is the beach of Pomonte, also called delle "Scalette", which can be reached by crossing the village, following the road that goes from the church to the sea. About 100 meters long, it is completely free and composed of gravel and granite pebbles, with wonderfully transparent water and a shallow seabed. Continuing to the right, for lovers of rocks, at the height of the historic "bigo" (a reconstruction of an ancient crane for loading granite blocks), there are the smooth and warm granite cliffs of Cala Maestrale and Calello, where you can lie down and take a dip in the blue of the sea, with your eyes turned to Corsica.
The most famous beach is the beach of the Relitto (wreck) (or of the District), reachable from the village of Pomonte, after crossing, by car or on foot, a wooden bridge, which separates it from the beach of Pomonte.

The Relitto beach is an expanse of pebbles, about 250 meters long, partly free and partly equipped with rental of sun loungers, umbrellas, pedal boats and a small bar.
It is one of the most popular stops for divers and snorkelers who frequent the island: in fact, about 150 meters away from the shore, there is the wreck of the Elviscot, a vessel that ran aground on the rock of the Ogliera on January 10, 1972. The wreck lies at a depth ranging from 3 to 12 meters and therefore always remains visible from the surface simply with a mask, even without going deep, thanks to the clarity of the water.

It is possible to reach the wreck with the pedal boats provided by the rental on the beach, but also safely by swimming. The excursion is suitable for adults and children, who can see the wreck, now home to hundreds of fish, from the surface of the water or go down a little further and admire it even more closely until they touch it.

You will be delighted and will not wait to tell everyone about it once you get home!

But Pomonte is not over here, in its small way it is full of surprises. In fact, south of the Relitto beach, we can reach a third beach, the Ogliera beach, perfect for those who love to stay away from the chaos and totally immersed in nature: about 300 meters long, it is barely visible from the road to the rocky coast that dominates it. It is composed of fine gravel and pebbles and takes its name from the Ogliera rock, which is located right in front of the beach. The three beaches of Pomonte are preferable with north-east Grecale and Levante winds, while when winds blow from the south-west they are subject to storm surges.

Pomonte is the perfect place for those who love nature and what the sea can offer. The seabed allows, in addition to being able to see the Elviscot wreck up close, also the opportunity to admire a vast marine fauna. The climate is characterized by a thermal wind, which allows you to practice windsurfing in the open flat sea and to stay late to admire one of the most beautiful sunsets on the whole island, with the sun, which slowly plunges magically behind Corsica.

How to reach Pomonte and its beaches

Pomonte is located about 13 km from Marina di Campo, once you have passed Fetovaia, continuing towards Chiessi or driving along the western ring (from Procchio - Marciana Marina - Patresi - Chiessi - Pomonte). The Pomonte beach can be reached from the church square, taking the road that reaches the sea. The parking is right next to the beach.
The beach of the Relitto can be reached by crossing a wooden bridge that separates it from the beach of Pomonte or by taking a marked path, just 500m outside Pomonte in the direction of Cavoli and Fetovaia, which goes from the provincial road to the sea.
Finally, the beach of the Ogliera can be reached starting from the beach of the Relitto, walking a few meters in the water or walking down a short but steep path, which starts from the provincial road above.
